Do you ever get lost in an old Gene Kelley or Fred Astaire movie musical and think to yourself, “Gee, they don’t make ‘em like they used to”?

Fortunately, for those of us in Sarasota, The Asolo Repertory’s production of “Noah Racey’s Pulse, The Beat of Song and Dance” delivers a healthy dose of classic musical nostalgia while also providing a show that is both contemporary and innovative.   Running now through June 16th, the world premiere of this dance musical will both delight and astound you.

Noah Racey, who conceived, wrote, choreographed, and performs in the show explains that he wanted to “harness that joyous moment that happens in a performance, when the lyrics of a song have captured the hearts of the audience just right, and singing just isn’t enough to express the magnitude of feeling going on inside of the performer, so he or she has to start doing a little step.”

“Pulse” takes you on a journey through exciting dance routines performed to classics like “One in Love with Amy” by Frank Loesser or “I’ve Got You Under My Skin” by Cole Porter and also weaves clever choreography into newer material like “Eet” by Regina Spektor or “You Can Love Yourself” by Keb’ Mo’.

The show is centered on the strengths and personalities of its incredible performers who share with the audience their passion for song and dance. What’s more, the line between dancing and musicianship are often blurred as this musical celebrates the art of rhythm in its many forms.

You can catch this toe-tapping production for the next several weeks at the Asolo Repertory Theatre, Florida’s premier professional theatre and a true gem in our museum area.

I have heard from neighbors that PULSE is excellent! Now I am hearing it again from a different source. It must be special and to have it be the World Premiere here in Sarasota at The Asolo is another first for our city with a flair for the arts!
