Tax Free Weekend: 5 Ways to Take Advantage of the Sales Tax Holiday

woman-shoppingFlorida’s tax free weekend is almost here and fortunately, Sarasota, Charlotte and Manatee Counties are prime destinations for a weekend of shopping. August 2 – 4, residents can take advantage of a three day holiday on sales tax relating to back to school items! Here, we give you the low down on what’s included, what’s not, ideas on what to buy, and where to shop!

1. Clothing Craving – Any item of clothing under $75 will benefit from the sales tax holiday. Send your children back to school in style. Visit the Ellenton Premium Outlets for deals on clothing from J. Crew, Tommy Hilfiger Kids, and the Gap Outlet.  While you are there, you can stop at White House Black Market and get yourself a chic summer dress.

2. Fancy Footwear – Find comfortable shoes for yourself and your kids. Shoes must be under $75 but fortunately there are no limits to how many you can purchase! Westfield Southgate and Westfield Sarasota Square will no doubt supply your desires from sneakers to sandals.

3. Supreme Supplies – Time to purchase your back to school stash of pens, pencils, glue, scissors, markers, lunch boxes and lots of paper! School supplies under $15 are eligible and you are sure to check off every item on your list if you visit the University Park area shopping centers. In fact, it’s probably best if you buy more then you need so that come December, you are not desperately searching your house for the disappearing scotch tape!

4. Compute This – The tax break, for the first time ever, applies to personal computers and tablets!  They must be valued at $750 or less and this does not include cell phones.  Still, it’s the perfect weekend to invest in an e-reader, laptop, or tablet. Take it with you to Perq Coffee Bar, sip an espresso, and read a cool blog (perhaps one about Perq Coffee Bar).

5. Of Mice and Monitors – The tax break now also applies to computer accessories. Mice, keyboards, modems, monitors and nonrecreational software are included. Just be sure to pick up an extra supply of printer cartridges so that Madison can print her surprise science report on Monarch butterflies during the first week of school.
