From theatres and galleries to marine life and ice skating, Sarasota and beyond offers a host of indoor activities and places to help you make the most of the area – come rain or shine.

Under the seaExplore the secrets and mysteries of the sea by spending an educational, fun-filled day at Mote Marine Aquarium. Located on the northern tip of Lido Key, Mote presents interesting exhibits of the deep sure to capture the interests of all ages. Get up close to stingrays, manatees, sea horses and more.

A work of art Delight your senses in a thrilling display of artistic expression at the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art. This internationally acclaimed museum showcases a collection spanning more than five centuries, with contemporary art, bronze replicas of antiquated sculptures, decorative arts, and historical circus artifacts.

Start your engines!Car enthusiasts will be in their element at the Sarasota Classic Car Museum, recognized as the second oldest continuously operating antique car museum in the nation. Open seven days a week, the museum features more than 75 antique and exotic cars with such one-of-a-kind classics as John Lennon’s 1965 Mercedes Benz and Paul McCartney’s Mini Cooper.

Just for show – Sarasota is well-known as the cultural capital of the state, and for good reason: we have some of the best theatres offering exciting performances daily. Matinees take place at 2pm throughout the week at The Asolo Theater, one of the premier theatrical institutions in Florida. Strike! – Great fun for all the family, bowling has long been one of America’s favorite past times. Stay dry on a rainy day and play the lanes at Sarasota Lanes or AMF Bradenton!

Reading in the rain – Channel your inner book worm at one of the Sarasota County Libraries. An array of books and DVD’s provide a great source of free entertainment, and there’s also a chance to catch interesting lectures and presentations.

Shop til you drop – Browse the eclectic boutiques and galleries in historic downtown Venice, and when you’re all shopped out, grab lunch at one of the many local eateries.

Skate away – The Stardust Skate Center is the largest indoor roller skating venue in the area, with a DJ playing music to projection screen videos. Open Friday, Saturday, & Sunday.

The Ellenton Ice and Sports Complex features two NHL sized ice rinks, as well as free admission to watch figure skaters train for events on select days.

Hands-On – The Gulfcoast Wonder and Imagination Zone, or more commonly referred to as G.Wiz, is a hands-on discovery center for folks of all ages. You can test and experiment with engaging science projects, and enjoy some of the world’s most interesting touring exhibits. Say hi to Snooty – Visit the South Florida Museum, the largest natural and cultural history museum on the Gulf Coast and home to Snooty the Manatee – the oldest known Manatee in the world. Also part of the museum is The Bishop Planetarium, where you can explore the universe through virtual journeys projected by one of the most advanced digital screening systems in the world.
