Useppa Island is a lush, tropical island in Lee County – off Florida’s southwest coast. Known for a truly private lifestyle, the island is only accessible by boat and the 100+ residents enjoy an atmosphere of calm relaxation and recreation.
For one weekend, however, the serene island environment is transformed into lively, family-oriented celebration: Memorial Day, which occurs this year May 24 – 27.
“The island takes on a party atmosphere for families and fishermen,” explained Brian McColgan, Useppa Island resident and Realtor with Michael Saunders & Company.
Visitors celebrate the holiday that pays tribute to our fallen soldiers with traditional family activities. The Useppa Island Club sponsors the weekend geared largely towards the area’s boaters. Flags and American memorabilia adorn the island while visitors enjoy an entire weekend scheduled with great food, island music and entertainment, and share in an abundance of recreation.
Mary McColgan, also a Useppa Island resident and Michael Saunders & Company Realtor, recommended that any kid under the age of 12 take part in the children’s fishing tournament while croquet and the Glacier Pool Party are favorite activities not to be missed.
All in all, what makes the holiday so special is Useppa Island itself. Its unparalleled tropical beauty, intimate community-environment, and luxuriant privacy has been drawing residents and visitors alike for over 10,000 years.
