Chalking Up a Celebration: The 2013 Sarasota Chalk Festival

The Sarasota Chalk FestivalIn the six years since its first colorful introduction, The Sarasota Chalk Festival has become one of downtown’s most popular cultural events. Inspired by the vibrant art work that graced the pavements of Italy in the sixteenth century, the festival celebrates all forms of street and performance art, from an incredible 500 artists.

The 2013 Chalk Festival runs for six days from November 13-18th, with the main events taking place between the 15th and 18th.  The exciting celebrations include live music, drama, dance, Acrobatics and of course, stunning pieces of art created using pastel chalk. This year’s theme is ‘Legacy of Valor: honoring veterans, inspiring patriotism and embracing freedom’, in tribute to those who sacrifice so much to make our freedom possible.

The festival is free for all to participate and attend, and the public are invited to watch as the pavements gradually come to life.

The artistry begins on November 13th in historic Burns Square, and culminates in a special awards ceremony and party at The Ice House. Tickets for the closing ceremony can be purchased for $50, with all proceeds going to the Avenida de Colores 501c3 charitable cultural arts organization.

Don’t miss the chance to get involved in this unique cultural event, and make the most of the fabulous arts we are so privileged to enjoy in Sarasota.

More information and the full schedule of events can be found on The Chalk Festival website.
