A Foundation for Giving Back

GiftGiving159380768This holiday season seems brighter and more festive thanks to another year of solid economic recovery in 2013.  Yet even as prosperity seeps back into the region at an ever-increasing pace, the holidays are also a reminder that tremendous need still exists within a region of Florida better known for its amazing beauty, climate and culture.  Fortunately, Southwest Florida is also known for having a huge philanthropic heart that beats with the can-do spirit of a community that looks after its own.

Pressing human needs never take a holiday.  For this reason Michael Saunders & Company is grateful for the involvement of its agents, management and staff at giving back to the communities that have helped define and nurture our business for almost forty years.  Many choose do so using the MSC Foundation as a way to further expand on the company’s decades-long commitment to community-based philanthropy.

Shelter, Sustenance, Education and a Path to Self-Sufficiency
Now in its third year, the MSC Foundation has channeled tens of thousands of dollars in humanitarian grants to dozens of not-for-profit organizations whose activities are consistent with its goal of providing shelter, sustenance, education and a path to self-sufficiency for the least fortunate members of the communities we serve.

Each grant is made possible through the generosity of our participating agents, who donate a portion of their commissions on each real estate transaction; as well as by our staff and leadership team, who contribute through voluntary payroll deductions throughout the year.   In exchange, each contributor may petition the foundation for grants to the local not-for-profit organizations of their choice.

Once in June—then again at the end of each year—the MSC Foundation awards the combined proceeds to several not-for-profit agencies who work tirelessly at the grass-roots level to curb such scourges on the community as hunger, homelessness; and domestic, sexual and child abuse.  The foundation’s governing council—made up of contributors from each of the company’s divisions and branch offices—carefully vets each charitable organization to ensure that every donated dollar reaches its intended recipient with a minimum of administrative overhead.

The 2013 Holiday Season
Last week, the MSC Foundation awarded grants to 27 local organizations including Community Youth Development of Sarasota County, Community Coalition on Homelessness, Safe Place and Rape Crisis Center (SPARCC), Big Brothers & Big Sisters of the Sun Coast, Jewish Family & Children’s Services, Habitat for Humanity, Feeding Empty Little Tummies (FELT), Charlotte County Homeless Coalition, Boys & Girls Club of Sarasota County, ALSO Youth and Family Partnership Center to name just a few.

The one practice that unites the many religious and cultural traditions of the holiday season—ranging from Christmas to Hanukkah and Kwanzaa—is the act of giving to others from the heart. Indeed, one of the truest meanings of the holiday season is appreciating the value and importance of those around you—be they family, friends or community.   We are unabashedly proud of our “family” at Michael Saunders & Company who regularly give of their time, money, talents and selves to make sure that every day of the year is like Christmas, Hanukkah or Kwanzaa for someone in need.

In whatever tradition you celebrate the holiday season, each of us at Michael Saunders & Company wish you and yours every joy of the season; and a safe, happy, healthy and successful New Year.
